Photographer Research (All 5 Artists)-Everyday activities

Kirsten Lewis-Hourly documentary family sessions

Kirsten, a former BA of child psychology and an elementary school teacher, is considered to be one of the best documentary family photographers in the world. Since living in Colorado, she has focused highly on her sought after day in the life and vacation sessions where she spends 72 hours with here family documenting their daily life with humour and compassion. From researching her work i like the way she captures the everyday life of her family, as it seems very real and natural as if they don't really notice that she is actually photographing them. I chose Kirsten because her work truly portrays the lives of families and how sometimes its chaotic instead of always being fun and happy, as theres a lot of things to juggle at the same time as trying to have fun with your family. Out of all the photographers Kristen's work show the downside and chaotic side of family life more than the other do, as most photographs want to capture the moments where everyone is getting along and having fun, but she manages to shows both sides in the best way, as all of the photos are still very intersting even if its showing a happy moment or a busy manic moment . I feel like Kirsten's work will influence the shoots that involve my mother as her work really shows the struggles of parenting with toddlers, so i would take a few photos that are relevant to Kirstens work.

For example the photograph with the girls and what looks like their mother in bed, normally that would be a weird situation to be modelling for so a lot of people would be awkward, However Kirsten has made it look and seem natural so the models of the photographs are still acting natural and laughing as if Kirsten is not present and taking photographs of them So this way of photograph gives the audience a true insight into the everyday life and activities of the models. This photo looks like a natural everyday activity but not an activity that would generalise to every family as some mothers don't really have time to lay in bed with their children, so that would then suggests that this photo was either taken in the evening, on the weekend or the mother just doesn't work which gives them time to have fun, where as some other mothers may not have time to lay around in bed as they have to just go to work. I think this photo would look better in colour as its a happy moment so the tones and colour of the photo should match the feelings and emotions of the models. So i think if there was like sun rays from a window shinning onto the bed and have it in colour would just lighten and match the mood.

The photograph of the mother who's trying to feed one of her children at the same time as the other one is pulling her away, is probably my favourite as it gives a true insight to how some mothers lives are, where as in movies or programmes its showed as being so simple and all of the children just behave and eat. However in reality its not so easy for some mothers as they will have plenty of other things on their agendas to be doing so then they are conflicted between what to do. The time of this photo was probably taken in the evening or around lunch time as one of the children is eating pasta and the other one is naked, this isn't really a normal situation as normally both of the children would be eating or if the girl is naked for a bath then both of them would be because as portrayed here its hard for the mother to do both of the activities by herself. This photo seems like it was taken in a decisive moment because the girl who is eating has just about got her mouth open ready for the fork to go in, as another second later the fork would be in her mouth, or the other girl pulling her would be further or may have just let go. So the fact that the photographer has waited till this exact moment creates more of an effect of the mother having a lot on her hands  and more to do and think about at that exact moment. Also this photo seems to show that the dad is not present at the time as the mother has to juggle everything at once, so this shows that not all families are perfect and housewives or mothers who work part time or are just simply single mothers have an easy day just because they are at home, they still have plenty to do and can find it hard to do all of that at once.

Jamie Davis Smith-Familys+Children

Jamie lives in Washington D.C with her four young children she loves photographing them and the adventures that they embark on, and the details of their everyday lives. She writes frequently for websites like the Huffington post, Washington post, about photography for people who want to get better photos of their children, hobbyists, and professional photographers. I chose Jamie because i liked the style of her photography, so the way she photographs children as she does more portraits than other photographers that i have researched for family everyday life. So her work will influence the shoots on my family, especially my younger brother. I would like to take photos of my brother in the way that Jamie does as it focuses more on the model in the photo and not so much on what they are actually doing, so like the photo of the baby in the lift. I feel like taking photo in the style that Jamie does will allow me to show techniques, like changes in aperture depth as with portraits i would want to have a shallow depth of field depending on the background of the photo. This would then give my photography more variation in the way that record.

Colie James-Family life

Colie lives in Colorado with her husband and daughter who she frequently uses as the subjects of her photographs, she would capture them carrying out their normal everyday tasks, for example her daughter playing or her husband working. She also photographs other families and their everyday lives. I chose Colie because of the way she captures her families life, i think its very casual and it feels like she's not even taking photographs of them or they can't she her as they just carry on like normal. Also i like the  composition of her photographs  and how her photographs aren't repetitive they're all unique and different. I feel like Colie's work will inspire my work the most as for my shoots I'm going to focus a lot on family life because of my little brother, so i will use her work as inspiration for my photographs and the way that she takes them, as i want to try and photograph my family in a way that looks like I'm not even there. She has also given me quite a lot of ideas of what to actually photograph interns of my family, for example my brother eating or my family taking the shopping out of the car, or the difficulty of fitting all of my brother things into the car. Even though i would like to take photographs in the style of Colies's photos i feel like it will be hard to compose them as well as Colie has and it will take a lot of time and a lot of photos, because with children they won't always listen or want to be photographed depending on what mood they're in, so i would have to dedicate a lot of time trying to find the right moment whilst taking photos of my brother whilst he's playing, as he seems to always want to look at the camera whilst I'm taking the photos, or actually be the one taking the photos.

Robert Doisneau-Young ladies, Shops and traders

Robert Doisneau was born in 1922 in Gentilly, a suburb of Paris. Robert was fifteen when he learnt engraving and lithography at the Estienne School in Paris and started designing labels for drug packaging. He became a camera assistant at André Vigneau’s studio in 1931, where he discovered artistic outlets that encouraged him on. The four years he spent working for the advertising department of Renault car maker, from where he was fired for repeated lateness, led him to the position of independent photographer. When he died in April 1994, he left behind 450,000 negatives that tell an entertaining story of his time with a tender and observant eye. I chose Robert because i find his photography quite diverse and interesting, as his photography ranges from politics of his time to children to shops and traders, he also travelled to foreign in in counties like the UK and the US and captured the difference in each of theses societies and their way of everyday life. I feel like Roberts work will influence multiple shoots of mine, including the shoot that I'm going to do of my friend which i got the idea from Roberts young ladies as it shows some activities that girls would do with their everyday life. Also Roberts shops and traders collection has influenced the idea for two of my shoots, as I'm going to do a shoot of shops and traders in London and then I'm going to Spain on holiday so i want to do a shoot of the shops and traders in Spain, so that i can show the difference of shops in both of these societies. The shoot that i do in Spain will probably be more similar to Roberts work than my shoot in London will because his shoot was in France so Spain and France are quite similar countries in terms of their shops and markets.
